The gateway is a piece of technology and source code that passes credit card data, authorization requests, and authorization responses over the Internet using encryption technology.

The transaction information is sent by the Payment Gateway to the bank or credit card network where the status of the card is reviewed for available credit/funds. Along with numerous fraud checks the transaction is determined or verified. An authorization code is returned to the Payment Gateway; and the encrypted information is returned directly to the merchant’s origin of payment where the transaction is authorized or declined.
